Business acumen is one of HR’s most valuable skills. Help your team develop theirs with our online training tool.
Time and again our research into what makes a great HR business partner has identified business acumen as a key skill – one that distinguishes exceptional HR professionals from the crowd. Our research has also shown business acumen is something people can develop. So we decided to create an online tool to help HR professionals do just that.
Online but real
There are lots of online training tools about nowadays. In reality many are no more than glorified online manuals. Think Business takes a more practical and interactive approach.
Participants are set a series of three realistic business meeting scenarios, with particularly thorny issues to discuss and resolve. These enable HR professionals to hone their skills on business challenges with real business pressures – all within a safe online environment.
One complete learning experience will last approximately 60- 90 minutes depending on the choices that are made. Participants have the freedom to choose how many of the scenarios they want to work through, as they can access the tool online from their desks. Once logged on they’re introduced to the organisation they’ll be ‘working for’. They’re provided with background information on the challenges it faces. Then they are invited to join a business meeting and a scenario is played out. As the action unfolds they have to select and apply knowledge of the business in order to make decisions.
Each decision influences the outcomes achieved for the organisation and the individual, which means people can see first-hand what effect business knowledge and insight can have. The tool also provides tailored feedback and analysis after every decision to help people reflect on their performance and approach.
Think Business contains a fully developed organisational case study, 37 video clips, 12 organisational and industry information sources, 5 audio files, an 8-question quiz to test financial acumen and more than 40 sets of tailored debrief notes. There are more than 30 different ‘routes’ that a learner can take as they navigate their way through the scenarios that are presented to them. Learners are encouraged to return to Think Business and make different decisions to explore the outcomes they get, or select particular meeting scenarios to re-play and see the impact of different choices.
One tool for all
Because it’s scenario based, Think Business can help anyone refine their business acumen skills – from a brand new business partner to an experienced HR pro.
The tailored feedback also ensures it’s a learning experience that can be applied immediately in real life. Think Business comes with best-practice guides based on our work and research with successful HR leaders around the world. It can also be linked directly to key areas in the Orion HR Success Kitbag, an online resource that will enable individuals to further their knowledge and development in areas highlighted by their learning experience.
