<description>Hi Colin - thanks for the comments. I think you are spot on about the giving users (as opposed to exec sponsors) understanding what is coming in advance. We have been using visual maps and other similar tools to give staff, unions, and line managers a chance to do that during the design phase. I would be interested in hearing what others have found works.

		<description>Simon

I am enjoying your series on HR Services. I am also thinking about a third black-hole that sucks in so much unproductive leadership time and energy, that is the black-hole of ‘unaligned expectations’ between the Service Provider (in-house or external) and the businesses they serve.

More time spent up-front from service and customer / client leaders on understanding what is going to happen, what the service will be like and agreeing behaviours, in advance, for when things do not go smoothly all help to avoid this particular black hole. However, this engagement has to involve those actually providing the service and those dealing with it at the sharp-end in the recipient business, ie beyond the Top Execs doing the deals or signing off on the in-house shared service projects.

Looking forward to your next instalment!

<description>Dermot - thanks for that. I really have seen some great services offered that do that. Forecasting /analytics services and proactive ER case management services are two that spring to mind. The HRO providers are also getting wise to this and have launched services for companies that cannot / do not want to make the investment themselves.

Cheers</description>

		<description>Simon,

Good articles - having lived through the last 8 years as the head of a very large hr services organisation I agree with the sentiment behind your articles. I have sensed for a number of years that the wholesale outsourcing of hr services was on the downturn as stakeholders realised the advantages that a professional, nimble, in house service fuction can provide.

Once the initial euphoria of the hr cost savings had gone and the knowledge that further savings can only be made by sacrificing operational flexibility then this can send the inhouse provider in a different direction - driving up the value chain.

I look forward to reading more.
