Seasons Greetings from Orion Partners

:

We would like to send all our friends and colleagues our best wishes for the season and a happy and prosperous New Year. This year Orion Partners have elected to support two charities that have special significance for us.

The Mayagnan Childrens' Fund was set up to help a number of initiatives supporting children and their mothers in Nicaragua. Our Managing Partner Jane's mother and aunt have taken a great personal interest in the cause since first visiting the country five years ago and have been back each year since to meet some of the people who the fund aims to help.

Current projects of note are:

  • The Los Quinchos centre at La Chureca tip in Managua - 3000 people live on this tip, half are children, try googling "la Chureca" and have a look at some of the Youtube clips, you'll see why we want to help.
  • The Mama Licha Clinic in Esteli where Mama Licha trains midwives and supports mothers and babies.

If you would like to read more about some of their experiences in Nicaragua you might like to take a look at 'Rice and Beans', Jane's aunt Maggie Barclay's account of her and her sister's travels in the country. tinyurl.com/y8tbtoa. All profits from the book also go to the fund and it's a great read.

Child's i Foundation, aims to help the hundreds of Ugandan babies abandoned and left to die every year in the capital Kampala. The Foundation wants to help put an end to the problem of child abandonment in Uganda by setting up its ‘Child Abandonment Project'. Developed with leading experts in social care in the UK and Uganda, this unique model has three elements: a support programme to help mothers at risk of abandoning their babies; a transitional home to provide short-term life-saving care; and a family placement programme to ensure every child grows up in a loving family.
Through the foundation's ‘Buy a Brick' online donation scheme, the public can now donate by purchasing virtual bricks to fund the first phase of the project to set up a babies' home.
